How to use Metallic Waterslide Decal Paper

How to use Metallic Waterslide Decal Paper

Metallic Waterslide Decal Paper is another popular product from the Waterslide Decal Paper range, suitable for any home or office Laser printer. Metallic Waterslide includes a metallic layer, giving your images a captivating, shiny, reflective quality. Great for adding a shiny touch to your project and creating eye-catching decorations with professional high-quality results.

The beauty in Metalliic Decals is the ability to elevate the aesthetic appeal, highlighting the fine details in your designs, delicate motifs, or a layer of complexity in the artwork adding more depth to a design.

Metallic Waterslide Decal Paper is available in a large range of metallic colors, including black foil and white foil, allowing you to create white decals without a White Toner Laser Printer. Whether you're aiming for a classic, elegant look with gold, a modern appearance, or just a subtle color, there's an option for every style.

Surfaces

As with any Waterslide Decal Paper, it is only suitable for hard, smooth surfaces. Such as, ceramic, metal, plastic, glass, wax, soap, painted surfaces. If you're interested in adding decals to rough or porous surfaces, there are two options: Our multi-award-winning Film-Free Waterslide Decal Paper (also available as Film-Free Metallic), gives you ability to adhere to a larger range of surfaces as well as transfer your decal, and peel away the clear film leaving behind just the image you transferred, with dishwasher-safe results. Rub-On Transfer Paper (also available as Rub-On Metallic), is a great a paper-like matte finish option, allowing you to essentially create your own highly adhesive stickers.

Instructions

Materials Needed:

  • Laser Printer
  • Laminator 75°C (167°F) minimum.
  • Scissors, Craft Knife or Cutting Machine.
  • Squeegee, Tissue or Popsicle.
  • Lukewarm Water.

Metallic Waterslide Decal Paper doesn't need mirroring (flipping the image).

The image must be all black or brown, this is to create a thick layer of toner the metallic can bind to..

    Step 1: Print

Make sure your Laser Printer Settings have been set accordingly:

PAPER TYPE: Label Paper (175g or more) / Thick Paper / Decal Paper.

DPI: 600 or above. We recommend higher DPI for miniatures / dioramas.

    Maximum Photo Resolution.

We advise you to use the manual feed in your printer (not the paper tray).

Print on the glossy side of the decal paper.

Step 2: Attach the Metallic Foil

Place the the Metallic foil onto the decal paper.

We recommending securing the side that's going into the laminator by using glue.

    Step 3: Laminate

Feed the layers through the laminator.

We recommend setting the laminatiion heat to 75°C (167°F) minimum, this cures the metallic layer to the image.

Peel off the Metallic foil when ready.

We would advise against using 3rd party foils. The foils provided with this product are dual layered, allowing to release the excess metallic easily.

    Step 4: Cut

Cut out the image using Scissors, a Craft Knife, or Cutting Machine.

You may want to cut closer depending on your desired result.

You can now store these decals in an airtight bag, or use them right away.

    Step 5: Submerge

Submerge in lukewarm water until the image has separated from the backing paper.
You'll know it's ready if the two layers glide between your fingers. Don't leave in the water for too long as this can ruin the decal.

The backing is meant to slide, but do not take off the backing yet.

    Step 6: Apply

TIP: Splash some water on the surface, it'll make it easier to re-adjust.

Place the decal down with the image facing away from the surface.

Gently slide the decal onto the surface, by sliding out the backing from underneath.

    Waterslide:

You can now slide around the decal on the surface gently until you are satisfied with the position, then press down to start securing the image.

    Step 7: Squeegee

Once the decal is in the desired position, gently remove any excess moisture by using a squeegee. A tissue is useful for wiping away excess water.

We strongly recommend using our squeegee or similar, as it has a large contact area, ideal for Waterslide Decals.

You can gradually press down harder to squeeze out any excess moisture, while the adhesion starts to secure the image.

The decal will start to look dry if done correctly.

    Finished!

The decal is now finished. It will get more durable as it dries, you can dry it gently with a blow dryer but we recommend letting it dry naturally.

    Washing

This version of Waterslide Decal Paper is not ideal for washing. It can be hand washed if necessary, but it's a not designed to be dishwasher-safe or last through multiple washes.

If dishwasher-safe results are something you require, we recommend our multi-award-winning Film-Free Waterslide Decal Paper (also available as Film-Free Metallic). It gives you ability to transfer your decal, and peel away the clear film leaving behind the cured image you transferred, with dishwasher-safe results.

    Burning

It is safe to burn on candles. Aside from a little charring, the decal siimply melts away like the rest of the wax. No noticeable odours or smoke.

How can I maximise longevity and durability?

We recommend choosing an appropriate finish for your project, such as W1 Top Coat, Epoxy Resin, Clear Acrylic Sealant, Mod Podge, Clear Polyurethane Spray, Ceramic Glaze. This will protect your decal and allows you to make the finish glossier or more mattified. Coatings are not recommended on candles.

    How can I print white?

Domestic Printers are designed to print onto white paper, as such, white ink isn't included. You may need to use a White Toner Laser Printer, usually available at your nearest printing service.

I made a mistake, how can I remove the transfer?

This Decal Paper version is easy to remove with dish cleaner.
